On Tides and Fathoms

On Tides and Fathoms

A film triptych exploring stories held by three rural buildings, a beach hut, a shepherd’s hut and a lookout tower

Three locations have eaten away at me for several years, nagged and pestered, annoyed and itched until the project Roaming offered the excuse to explore them further through capturing them on film, uncovering the stories they hold. Early research revealed rich memories of these places in the minds of the people who live amongst them with a whole lot more besides; discovered fact was intermingled with conjecture and fiction.
The stories of those Suffolk outposts and the peoples they touch are woven into an unfolding, journeying narrative and are accompanied by a collection of poems written by Martin Figura. Knitting together the imagination with factual history, the film draws in the visual clues with a newly composed, atmospheric sound score by Phillip Warren and Seamus Wright, all elements combining into multi-layered tales of travel, trade and the tides of life.
