Impossible Changeling

Impossible Changeling

An off-site commission for Towner, Eastbourne

Consultation with the local residents and visiting tourists indicated the beach hut was far more than a place to change into one’s bathing suit. It is a place of sanctuary and privacy, but with a strong relationship to home in respect of contents and aesthetic, the beach hut is a place on the edge - of land and sea and of living. Caroline Wright lined Beach Hut No 8 in gold leaf, drawing attention to its value and spirituality, and the alchemic role the transformed space played on human behaviour. Simultaneously, Wright placed 142 gilded pebbles - the number of miles between her studio in Suffolk and Eastbourne – onto the beach at regular intervals over a period of several days. The pebbles were infiltrators to the man made beach at Eastbourne. Originating from Suffolk, they became changelings, known only by their gold livery and the possibility of being found by chance.
