The National Trust property Anglesey Abbey is located just outside Cambridge. The house nestles in 120 acres of grounds designed by the past owner Lord Fairhaven. Continuing Lord Fairhaven's passion for art in the gardens and his love of ornithology, this commission fulfils his unrealised plans for a folly in the grounds. Lord Fairhaven had a passion for life as a country gentleman, partaking in shooting, fishing and other country pursuits. He never married and his wealth allowed him freedom to roam his estate within his self imposed daily routine, a state that was as much about entrapment as freedom. On The Wing is a large golden birdcage nestling in the South Park surrounded by trees and meadowland. The birdcage, with its door permanently open, was created after extensive research into the life and objects of Lord Fairhaven. Anglesey Abbey is rich with ornithological curiosity and is filled with paintings of birds, tapestries depicting birds, bird sculptures and a library rich with volumes of British and foreign birds. Pages from the latter have been selectively reproduced in a limited edition poster for the project designed by Joff + Ollie.   A live, sonic and visual performance inspired by Lord Fairhaven's life took place on 13th August 2016 incorporating a new composition for solo flute. The score took the flight paths of native birds in the Anglesey Abbey grounds as reference and form for the piece.  A short video of the performance can be seen here. On the Wing performers were Charlotte Barlow, Chandra Chapman, Howard Cooper, Becky Demmen, Gaganpreet Gill Kaur, Esther McNeill, Adie Mueller, Marta Polak, Carla Rees, Max K Weaver and Genevieve Wedgbury   All photos by Tony Millings, apart from birdcage and person by Phil Mynott.
