Neon text work proclaiming the principles of the Japanese tea ceremony. Untitled (believe) was made after a short residency in Tokyo, Japan in 2006. Responding to the rejection of tradition by young people in favour of a digital, neon-lit city life, the work takes the Buddhist principles of the tea ceremony and transfers them into bright, sencha tea-coloured neon signs. To study and perform the ceremony takes around ten years, a commitment that young people of today are increasingly unwilling to undertake. As a result the tradition of the tea ceremony is slowly dying out.

Untitled (believe) has been shown at Latitude Festival, in Encounters – a Fermynwoods Contemporary Art project, firstsite, Colchester and in TULCA Festival, Galway Ireland. “The words were empowering and relatable”, audience member at Latitude 2010. Untitled (believe) was made with the support of firstsite, Colchester.
