Anglesey Abbey nestles in 120 acres of grounds landscaped by the past owner, Lord Fairhaven. On the Wing celebrated Lord Fairhaven's love of ornithology in a commission fulfilling his unrealised plans for a garden folly. Lord Fairhaven was a country gentleman, partaking in shooting, fishing and other country pursuits. He never married, and his wealth allowed him freedom to roam his estate within his self-imposed daily routine, a state that was as much about entrapment as freedom.
On The Wing is a large golden birdcage surrounded by trees and meadowland, with its door permanently open. Anglesey Abbey is filled with paintings of birds, tapestries depicting bird species, bird sculptures and a library rich with volumes of British and foreign birds. Pages from the latter were reproduced in a limited-edition poster for the project designed by Joff + Ollie. A performance inspired by Lord Fairhaven's life incorporated a new composition for solo flute. The score used mapped flight paths of native birds in the Anglesey Abbey grounds as a reference for the piece. The performance, On the Wing, was performed by Charlotte Barlow, Chandra Chapman, Howard Cooper, Becky Demmen, Gaganpreet Gill Kaur, Esther McNeill, Adie Mueller, Marta Polak, Carla Rees, Max K Weaver and Genevieve Wedgbury.
